Does New Jersey require annual CEUs for CHHAs?
No. The New Jersey Board of Nursing’s current CHHA renewal regulations do not require a CHHA to earn 12 CEUs—or any specific number of continuing-education credits—each year to renew a certification.
The frequently quoted “12 hours per year” requirement comes from a federal regulation governing Medicare-certified home health agencies subject to federal conditions of participation. Under that rule, a covered agency must ensure that its home health aides receive at least 12 hours of in-service training during each 12-month period.
These are 12 hours of in-service training, not 12 Continuing Education Units. The federal requirement is connected to employment through a covered home health agency; it is not a general New Jersey Board of Nursing requirement for CHHA certification renewal.
Your employer may have separate requirements
Training requirements can vary according to the type of agency, the services it provides, the programs in which it participates, and its internal policies. Ask your employer which orientation, in-service training, competency evaluations, or documentation requirements apply to your position.
