Sunlight Care LLC provides a training program approved by the New Jersey Board of Nursing, within the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, for students seeking certification as Certified Homemaker-Home Health Aides (CHHAs). We also provide an approved bridge program for qualified New Jersey Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs).
Coursework is completed online. Students must attend required hands-on skills sessions and final testing at our Cherry Hill training center:

What is a Certified Homemaker-Home Health Aide?
Certified Homemaker-Home Health Aides help individuals who need assistance with activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, toileting, mobility, and eating. These services help clients remain safely and comfortably in their homes. CHHAs may also work with individuals in assisted-living facilities or other approved care settings.
How do I become a Certified Homemaker-Home Health Aide?
Students must successfully complete a New Jersey Board of Nursing-approved CHHA training program, including the required coursework, hands-on skills training, competency testing, and skills evaluation. Sunlight Care provides online coursework with required hands-on skills sessions and final testing at our Cherry Hill training center.
After successfully completing the program, you will receive a training certificate of completion. This certificate is not your state certification. You must apply separately to the New Jersey Board of Nursing and satisfy the Board’s current certification requirements.
I am a Certified Nursing Assistant in New Jersey. Can I become a CHHA?
If you have an active New Jersey Certified Nursing Assistant certification, you may qualify for Sunlight Care’s CNA-to-CHHA bridge program. The bridge program covers the home-care training required for eligible New Jersey CNAs.
Eligibility depends on your current New Jersey CNA certification status and the New Jersey Board of Nursing’s requirements. Contact Sunlight Care before registering so we can confirm which program is appropriate for you. A CNA certification issued by another state does not automatically qualify a student for the New Jersey bridge program.
Sunlight Care Program Requirements
Students enrolling in Sunlight Care’s program must be prepared to:
- Complete the required online coursework, assignments, and final testing.
- Use a reliable computer or laptop with dependable internet access.
- Attend the required hands-on skills sessions at our Cherry Hill training center.
- Participate safely in hands-on training activities, including mobility assistance and personal-care skills.
Sunlight Care’s instruction and written coursework are currently provided in English. Please contact us before registering if you have questions about language assistance, accessibility, or accommodations for the hands-on portion of the program.
Review the State certification requirements before paying
Completing the Sunlight Care training program does not automatically make you a state-certified CHHA. Before registering and paying tuition, review the requirements that apply when you submit your separate certification application to the New Jersey Board of Nursing.
- Complete a New Jersey Board of Nursing-approved training program.
- Complete the required criminal-history background check and fingerprinting.
- Meet the Board’s current application and certification requirements.
- Obtain a promise of employment from an eligible New Jersey home care agency.
- Submit the certification application within six months after successfully completing the training program.
- Complete the Board’s online application and pay the applicable state fees.
A promise of employment is not the same as already being employed. You do not need to be employed by Sunlight Care to attend the training program.
Background-check results and other matters reviewed by the State can affect certification eligibility. Contact the Board directly if you have questions about your individual history or eligibility before paying for training.

Registration is completed online. Have the following information available:
- A current government-issued photo ID.
- Your contact and emergency-contact information.
- Your New Jersey CNA certification information if you are applying for the CNA-to-CHHA bridge program.
- Any name-change documentation needed to match your identification or professional records.
The New Jersey Board of Nursing may request additional documents when you apply for state certification. Follow the instructions in the Board’s current online application.
I have a Home Health Aide certificate from another state. Can it be transferred to New Jersey?
An out-of-state certification may qualify for New Jersey certification by endorsement, but transfer is not automatic. The New Jersey Board of Nursing determines whether another state’s education and examination requirements are substantially equivalent to New Jersey’s requirements.
The Board’s endorsement requirements include holding a valid certification in good standing, having practiced as a CHHA for at least six months during the five years before applying, completing the required criminal-history background checks, and satisfying the Board’s other current application requirements.

My New Jersey CHHA certification has expired. What should I do?
The steps required to restore an expired certification depend on how long it has been expired and the New Jersey Board of Nursing’s current requirements. You may be required to complete additional training, a competency test, a skills evaluation, or other reinstatement requirements.
Contact the New Jersey Board of Nursing at (973) 504-6430 before registering for a course. The Board can tell you what is required for your certification status.
Do I need a promise of employment?
A promise of employment from an eligible New Jersey home care agency is required as part of the CHHA certification process. A promise of employment does not mean that you must already be employed when you enroll in training.
You do not need to be employed by Sunlight Care to take our training program, and completing the program does not guarantee employment.

How long is my certification valid?
New Jersey CHHA certifications are renewed according to the schedule established by the New Jersey Board of Nursing. Renewal dates, employment requirements, fees, and procedures may change. Check your certification record and the Board’s current renewal instructions when it is time to renew.
